Athens to Savannah Ride

2024 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Athens to Savannah Ride. A lot has changed over the last two decades, but not what is at the core of this tradition.

We can't take credit for the ride. That goes to Ken Sherman. Our job is to keep moving it forward and steward Athens to Savannah into the next quarter century.

In 1999, when Ken accepted a challenge from his teacher Wallace Salter and the two rolled out of Athens on the inaugural ride, Ken may not have been looking beyond the finish line in Savannah. But, over the years, the ride returned, more people joined, and a legacy was born.

Gaining recognition in Georgia and across the southeast, Athens to Savannah became a fundraiser for education. Twenty years later, when Ken needed to retire from the ride, Georgia Hi-Lo Founder, Mary Charles Howard was looking for a fundraiser. Stars aligned, and Athens to Savannah found a new mission to support.

Since, Athens to Savannah has served to draw awareness and support for the Georgia Hi-Lo Trail, a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to connect and empower rural Georgia. Each year we try to bring something new to the rider experience, while taking care to keep what is at the core of this tradition. Athens to Savannah still welcomes everyone to join. It still supports a greater cause. It is still built on a foundation of fellowship with the people we ride with and those we meet along the way. And of course, there's still the anticipation of adventure when we line up in Athens on the fourth weekend of October to head south to Savannah!

As we prepare for the 2023 Athens to Savannah Ride, we have our eyes on 2024, when we will celebrate our 25th anniversary. We would love to hear from you. We invite participants, friends, sponsors, destinations, and other partners to share their feedback about how we can make Athens to Savannah even better. If you have ideas you think we should consider for our 2024 anniversary ride and beyond, please share them with us! We want to know what you think about how we can improve the ATHSAV experience. Please reach out, and share!
